 Romsey declared a township in 1858.

Surrounded on three sides by the Great Dividing Range in 1858, the town of Five Mile Creek was officially recognised, but only six weeks later, the town was renamed Romsey.
Reasons for the change are unclear but most agree it was named after Romsey in Hampshire, England.
There are only two towns named Romsey in the world the other one is located in England

First Australian Rules Football game in Victoria  1858

The first game of football using what was to be termed Australian Rules was played in Yarra Park east of Melbourne between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar school teams. 40 players on each team and a pitch 800 metres long.

First manned flight in Australia  

The first manned flight in Australia was undertaken by William Dean in Melbourne in a gas filled balloon on 1 February 1858 ascending from the Cremourne Gardens in Richmond and landing in Heidelberg.

Discovery of the `Welcome Nugget' Wednesday, June 9 1858

The `Welcome Nugget' was found in a trench on Bakery Hill, Ballarat, by Richard Jeffrey and party of the Red Hill Co. It was the second largest gold nugget ever found and weighed 2217 oz (62.85 kg).
