Authorised food additives in the European Union (EU).
Since 1990, all authorised food additives and their conditions of use have been harmonised at European level, in order to protect consumer health and guarantee the free movement of foodstuffs in the European Union (EU).

By Directive 94/34/EC Member States are authorised to prohibit the use of certain additives in foodstuffs produced using traditional methods on their territories, provided the prohibition existed on 1 January 1992 and that the free movement of goods is not affected.

However, Member States are required to permit on their territory the production of non-traditional products in conformity with the Directives on additives.

Reversal of Banned Food Additives by some European countries.

12 May 2006 - Norway used to regulate colourings, sweeteners and nitrite/nitrate different than the EC countries. In 2001 Norway implemented the EC Directives on food additives, and today there is no difference between the food additives legislation in Norway and the EC Member States.

Why did Norway implement the EC legislation on food additives?

Norway became a member of the European Economic Area in 1995. The EEA agreement is between the EFTA countries (Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) and the countries of the Europan Community . As a part of that agreement, Norway may participate in EC meetings where the legislation is developed (not in the Council and the Parliament). Further on, Norway is committed to implement the EC legislation that is developed in those meetings.
